About
Wikimedia Georgia (WMGE) is an independent non-profit organization for Wikimedia volunteers in Georgia, representing the Wikimedia Foundation chapter. It was created by active members of the Wikimedia community in Georgia who are interested in developing Wikimedia projects (such as Wikipedia) in the Georgian language and organizing and participating in outreach activities at the national level. One of its core missions is to aid and encourage people to collect, develop, and disseminate knowledge and other educational, cultural, and historical content in the public domain or under licenses that allow everyone to use the knowledge freely and distribute and modify it without restriction.
Wikimedia Georgia, guided by its comprehensive Strategic Plan for 2024–2026, undertakes the development of a detailed Annual Plan each year. This plan was created by a thorough evaluation of the organization’s past activities, actions, and community feedback. By analyzing the achievements and challenges of previous years, Wikimedia Georgia continuously refines its programs and projects to ensure alignment with both strategic priorities and the evolving needs of the Wikimedia movement locally.
This process enables us to remain adaptable and responsive, strengthening the effectiveness and sustainability of our work. Programs are adjusted based on data and lessons learned.
Programs
Content Development and Improvement
For many years, Wikimedia Georgia has focused on the Georgian Wikipedia as its primary initiative for content development and improvement. This focus has enabled us to significantly expand access to free knowledge in the Georgian language and improve the quality and reliability of articles across a wide range of topics. However, over the past two years, in addition to continuing our commitment to Georgian Wikipedia, we have actively diversified our contributions by expanding and enriching content on other key Wikimedia projects. This includes: Wikisource, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.
Bridging content gaps across Wikimedia projects is important. This effort aims to enhance the visibility and representation of topics that are currently underrepresented or poorly documented. These gaps often show larger issues with how knowledge is produced and shared. It is crucial to address them to create a fairer and more complete knowledge system.
The Wikimedia Georgia mission is to ensure that everyone has access to free, reliable, and diverse information created by volunteers. Addressing content gaps is not just a goal for us, but it is a core commitment to knowledge equity.
Wikimedia Georgia is on the way to filling the content gap in Wikimedia projects by carrying out the following activities:
- Article Contests: The organization will continue to hold thematic and international annual contests (e.g., CEE Spring, Wikipedia Asian Month), which already have a traditional character. However, the main focus will be on encouraging editors to participate more actively. We will also be running more targeted thematic contests in collaboration with various affiliates. In addition, contests will be extended to other Wikimedia projects (Wikisource, Wikidata, Commons) besides Wikipedia.
- Media Contests: This year, WMGE will hold Wiki Loves Earth, focusing on capturing previously unexplored natural landscapes. Additionally, WMGE will launch a new project to document Georgian villages using drones, which will help design Wikipedia articles about villages with images.
- Training: Conduct training for employees of the partner organization and institutes on how to work on Wikimedia projects. This will enable bringing more resources to Wikimedia projects.
- Edit-a-thons: A series of edit-a-thones will be organized on various topics, including WikiGap.
- Workshops: To be organized to improve content in Wikimedia projects.
As progress is made, a decision will be made to extend or improve the process of organizing specific events. Some events will be organized in cooperation with our partners.
Community Development
Community development remains a strategic priority for Wikimedia Georgia, which supports and develops the local Wikimedia community in Georgia through its programs every year. The main priority of this program is to help the Wikimedia community and contributors build their skills and thereby contribute to the sustainability of the local community. Wikimedia Georgia wants to attract new volunteers, editors, and people to the initiative of the Wikimedia movement to develop and improve Wikimedia projects. In accordance with the strategic plan and for the sustainable development of the Wikimedia community in Georgia, the organization has planned the following activities for 2026:
- WikiClubs: Clubs are local, student-based hubs that foster a collaborative and supportive environment for new editors. It serves as a physical space where students and teachers can meet, learn, and work on Wikimedia projects together. For newcomers, WikiClubs offer an entry point to the movement, providing guidance from experienced volunteers. These clubs are essential for building a strong local community, enabling members to collaborate on projects, share knowledge, and feel connected to the movement. Currently, there are eight WikiClubs in Georgia, which offer courses on editing Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects at educational institutions. We will continue to open new clubs in the coming year.
- WikiCamps: For many years, WikiCamps have remained the primary tool for quickly and effectively training space for students and teachers to work with Wikimedia projects, and most importantly, WikiCamps participants become the foundation for opening new Wikiclubs. In addition to the local WikiCamps in Georgia, we are planning to hold a joint camp in collaboration with Wikimedia Turkey in 2026.
- Workshops: Wikimedia Georgia will conduct workshops for all interested parties who want to contribute to developing Wikimedia projects. This is intended for newcomers who will be learning wiki-technologies and existing editors who will improve their skills on Wikimedia projects.
- Edit-a-thons: Throughout the year, Wikimedia Georgia will hold a series of thematic edit-a-thons, including one on closing the gender gap and other thematic gaps in Wikimedia projects.
- Meetups: The organization will host various meetings in different locations, featuring members of the Wikimedia community. Also, the annual Wikimedia Conference will take place in Tbilisi. This will bring volunteers and all interested parties closer to Wikimedia projects. It’s also a platform for developing strategic plans for Wikimedia Georgia.
- Scholarships: For several years now, Wikimedia Georgia has been offering scholarships to members of the Georgian Wikimedia community to participate in global (Wikimania) and regional (Wikimedia CEE Meeting) Wikimedia meetings. We have also provided and will continue to provide scholarships to young people from the community to participate in thematic Wikimedia meetings (Wikimedia Young Meeting and CEE Hub Youth Group Meetings). This is the best way to engage the local community in global Wikimedia processes, as well as a valuable tool for acquiring and developing the skills of contributors, who then share their experience with other local community members.
In accordance with the organization's strategic plan, as this annual plan progresses, we can make adjustments for the community's sustainable development.
Advocacy
In 2026, Wikimedia Georgia does not plan to introduce new initiatives or actively promote existing ones at various levels in Georgia. Our priority for 2026 is to maintain current projects in the background and develop them using Wikimedia Georgia's existing internal resources.
Wikimedia Georgia is committed to exploring new external proposals within this programmatic framework and will ensure transparent communication with the local Wikimedia community in Georgia regarding these initiatives.
Wikimedia Georgia remains dedicated to its commitments and will continue to partner with various stakeholders to develop and promote global advocacy initiatives. We will work alongside other Wikimedia affiliates and the Wikimedia Foundation on the Global Digital Compact (GDC). Additionally, Wikimedia Georgia will also continue to collaborate with Wikimedia Europe on common European initiatives.
Partnership
Wikimedia Georgia will continue strengthening partnerships with all existing partners, including GLAM, educational, and non-governmental organizations. Also, the organization will continue to expand its network of alliances.
Wikimedia Georgia has been collaborating with the National Library of Georgia for several years, and we are committed to further developing this partnership. We currently have an active Wikipedian at the library who integrates resources from the library into the Georgian Wikipedia and Wikidata. In 2026, we plan to complete projects that began in previous years. Additionally, Wikimedia Georgia will continue to provide training for National Library staff on participating in Wikimedia projects.
Wikimedia UG Georgia plans to establish new partnerships with schools (public and private) in Tbilisi and other regions of Georgia this year. This will allow us to open new WikiClubs based on these schools. Also, attract new teachers to Wikimedia projects.
Wikimedia Georgia also plans to collaborate with Wikimedia thematic organizations to address content gaps in the Georgian Wikipedia and other Georgian-language projects. First of all, we plan to begin collaborating with Wikimedia Med to develop and create new content about medicine in the Georgian Wikipedia.
Organizational Development
Wikimedia Georgia, after actively working to develop the organization itself and the skills of its staff, members, and volunteers, has achieved its goal of becoming a Wikimedia Chapter. In September 2025, the Wikimedia Foundation and AffCom recognized Wikimedia Georgia as a chapter.
The organization's next phase of development focuses on strengthening the local community and increasing outreach. A strong and engaged community is vital for the chapter's long-term success. Wikimedia Georgia plans to invest in training and skill development for its volunteers and members, offering workshops on advanced editing, project management, and community leadership. The organization will also work to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for newcomers.
The chapter will develop a new strategic plan that defines the future focus of the Wikimedia Movement's work and development in Georgia. We plan to complete this work by August 2025.
By focusing on these strategic areas, Wikimedia Georgia aims to solidify its role as a key contributor to the global Wikimedia movement while continuing to build a vibrant and sustainable free knowledge ecosystem within Georgia.
